A2 Bilona Ghee in Rajasthan: Why Where It's Made Matters

A2 Bilona Ghee from Sri Ganganagar Rajasthan - Ratnaya Organics

Most A2 ghee sold to Rajasthani buyers is made somewhere else. It is usually Gir ghee from Gujarat, or ghee from cattle kept far from the breed's home region.

We make ours in Sri Ganganagar, in the north of Rajasthan, from Rathi cows — a breed native to this exact part of the state.

This article explains why that geography is not just a marketing detail, what to look for when buying ghee locally in Rajasthan, and how to get ours if you are in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner or anywhere else in the state.

Rajasthan Has Its Own A2 Breed

The A2 ghee market in India is dominated by one breed name: Gir. Gir is a genuine indigenous A2 breed, and it is from Gujarat.

Rajasthan has its own. According to the NDDB Dairy Knowledge Portal, the Rathi breeding tract covers the Bikaner, Ganganagar and Jaisalmer districts of Rajasthan, with animals concentrated in the Loonkaransar tehsil of Bikaner — the area known as the Rathi tract. The breed takes its name from the Raths, a pastoral community that led a nomadic life across this region.

The conditions it was bred for are not gentle. NDDB describes the tract as having summers near 50°C, winters around 2°C, under 200 mm of rainfall in a year, and dust storms. A cow that gives usable milk through that is doing something a European breed cannot.

There is a second point worth knowing about this district. NDDB records that Rathi cattle are thought to have evolved from the intermixing of Sahiwal, Red Sindhi, Tharparkar and Dhanni, with a preponderance of Sahiwal blood — and that the Indian breeding tract for Sahiwal itself covers Ferozepur and Amritsar in Punjab and Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan.

So this district sits inside the native range of two related indigenous dairy breeds, and that is reflected in our herd. Ours is predominantly Rathi, with some Sahiwal cows alongside. We would rather say that than claim a single-breed herd we do not have — it is the kind of thing a serious buyer eventually checks.

Where Our Farm Is

Our farm is at Ward No 15, Shoypura, 6 SPD, Suratgarh, Sri Ganganagar district, Rajasthan 335804 — the same address as on our Google Business Profile, where you can also see our reviews and get directions. It is a 110-acre organic farm, certified under Jaivik Bharat / India Organic, and we have been making ghee here since 2019.

Sri Ganganagar is one of Rajasthan's more agriculturally productive districts, supported by canal irrigation. That matters for ghee more than it sounds: canal water means green fodder is available for far more of the year than in the drier parts of the Thar, and what a cow eats shows up in the ghee — in its colour, its aroma, and its fat-soluble vitamin content. Our ghee is a deeper golden-yellow in the months when the cows are on green fodder, and lighter in peak summer when more of the feed is stored dry matter. That variation is normal in real farm ghee and absent in blended product.

The farm is not a stock photo. You can come and see it — we take visits by appointment, arranged on WhatsApp at +91 9001924784. If you are anywhere in northern Rajasthan it is a drivable day trip, and we would rather you came than took our word for anything on this page.

The people who do the work are on our Know Your Farmer page, with their names and their own words.

How the Ghee Is Actually Made Here

The production is a village operation, not a factory one, and the way it is organised is the part we are most attached to.

Milk comes from our own herd and from cattle kept by families in the surrounding villages. It is collected centrally, set to curd, and then churned and clarified together — the work done largely by women from those same villages rather than by machinery. It is slower than a mechanised line and it does not scale the way a blending operation does. We make 800–900 litres of ghee a month. That is a real constraint, and it is why we do not run permanent deep discounts or supply general retail.

The part that matters locally: we buy village milk at ₹50–55 a litre. Before we started, the going rate here was ₹25–28. Doubling what a farming family earns for the same milk is the reason people work with us, and it is also why we can ask them about feed and grazing and get a straight answer — the relationship is not a one-season purchase order.

Five years ago the village had no paved road. It now ships to every state in India.

Buying Ghee Locally in Rajasthan: What to Check

Whether you buy from us or from anyone else in the state, these apply.

Ask which district the milk comes from. "Rajasthan" is not an answer — it is a large state. A producer who knows their supply chain can name a tehsil.

Ask whether it is actually Rathi. A lot of ghee sold in Rajasthan as local is made from crossbred cattle milk bought on the open market. Rathi is the regional breed; if someone is selling "Rajasthani A2 ghee" and cannot name a breed, ask why.

Check the FSSAI licence number. Every packaged ghee sold in India carries a 14-digit licence number on the label. Verify it against the FSSAI compliance portal — that the licence exists, is active, and belongs to the business named on the pack.

Ask for the lab report. This is the only thing that actually proves purity. Home tests cannot detect vegetable oil adulteration, which is the most common problem in Indian ghee. Our purity testing guide covers what a real report should show and which home tests are worth nothing.

Be careful at festival time. Demand for ghee spikes around Diwali and adulteration rises with it. Buy from someone who can produce documentation rather than from a temporary festive stall.

Delivery Across Rajasthan

We ship across the whole state. Typical delivery is 3–5 days to any Rajasthan address — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer and smaller towns alike. Shipping is free on orders above ₹999. We also deliver across India; we currently reach customers in more than 190 cities.

If you are in Jaipur: 3–5 days by courier, same as the rest of the state.

If you are in or near Sri Ganganagar: you can collect directly from the farm. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 9001924784 to arrange a time. There is no minimum order for pickup, and it is worth doing once even if you order online afterwards — seeing where a food is made settles the question better than any certificate.

Why Farm-Direct Is Different from Retail

When ghee moves through distributors and retailers, three things happen: the price rises without the product improving, the batch information is usually lost, and nobody in the chain can tell you which cows the milk came from.

Buying direct from a producer means:

  • You can ask when your jar was made
  • You can ask for the current lab report before you order
  • The producer's name is attached to the product, so there is somebody accountable
  • You can, if you want, go and look at the farm

This is not an argument that direct is always cheaper. It is an argument that direct is traceable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy pure A2 ghee in Rajasthan?
We make A2 bilona ghee from Rathi cows in Sri Ganganagar and deliver across Rajasthan in 3–5 days. Wherever you buy, ask for the district of origin, the breed, the FSSAI licence number and a lab report.

Is Rathi ghee better than Gir ghee?
There is no demonstrated nutritional advantage for either. Both are indigenous A2 breeds with similar butterfat. Rathi is native to Rajasthan; Gir is from Gujarat. Our breed comparison covers the differences honestly.

Do you deliver to Jaipur?
Yes. Typical delivery to Jaipur is 3–5 days, the same as the rest of Rajasthan.

Can I visit the farm?
Yes, by appointment. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 9001924784 and we will arrange a time. The farm is in Suratgarh, Sri Ganganagar district.

What is the price of A2 ghee in Rajasthan?
Ours currently runs from ₹549 for a 250 ml jar to ₹7,950 for a 5 litre can, with 500 ml and 1 litre in between. Prices across the state vary widely by producer, breed and method — it takes roughly 28–30 litres of milk to make one kilogram of bilona ghee, so anything priced far below that arithmetic deserves a question. See current prices here.

Do you sell in shops or only online?
We sell direct through our own website rather than through general retail, and we supply bulk and wholesale buyers separately. Farm pickup in Sri Ganganagar is the one offline option.
